Link's Curse 6

   chapter 6

As Link descended the staircase down into the darkness below, a chill crept over him. He still wished he had his lantern with him. It would sure help with the
darkness. He had no more fire flies in the magic jar and no other way to light his path. Had it been a mistake to enter the old, dead tree stump? He pushed the
thought aside and continued down the staircase, feeling very unsure of himself. The wooden steps creaked as he stepped slowly on each. He had to be careful, because
some of the steps were gone, most likely rotted away from dampness. The staircase seemed to go on forever, but Link finally reached to bottom a few minutes
later. He had to jump over the last two steps because they weren't even there. Once he had landed safely, there was only darkness all around him. He also noticed
how cold it had gotten suddenly, nearly as cold as when he was standing in the falling snow.

Link then realized that he was no longer standing on earth, but a broken stone floor. He lowered his sword and lightly tapped the stone beneath his feet. He
felt the cracks in the stone floor with his weapon. He decided he would use it as his guide to move around and avoid any possible traps or monsters laying in wait.
As he moved forward, tapping his sword lightly in front of him, there was suddenly movement above his head. He thought he heard the sound of fluttering wings beat-
ing heavily in the cold, stale air all around him. Link lifted his sword to swat at what ever it was. His blade hit something, and he heard a small screech, then
heard the sound of something small tumble to the floor. Whatever he had hit was dead, he was sure of that. Suddenly, he felt one of the flying things swoop down
at and then he felt a prick on the back of the neck. It stung painfully. "Bats!" he shouted, "These are blasted bats!" He was now angry. The bats suddenly seemed
alerted to Link's anger, and started to fly off. Link took one last swing with his sword, chopping another in half, in the darkness. It was a satisfying feeling.

Link then dropped to his knees and removed his back pack. He opened it quickly and blindly shuffled through it, searching for something to help with the pain
of the bite he had just received. But all he found was an old apple. It would have to do. He pulled it from his pack and took a big bite. As he chewed, he began to
a little better. The pain subsided as be finished the apple. Then he did something that some would consider odd. He rubbed a finger on the apple core to pick up a
bit of the juice from the fruit. Then he put the same finger to the bite on his neck and rubbed the apple juice into the small puncture. It was a trick that Rob
had once showed. Apple juice could help heal wounds and bites from small animals. It seemed to work, because for the rest of the day and the following days to come,
he had no problem with the bite getting infected or hurting anymore. "Good old Rob," thought Link, smiling. "I wonder how he's doing?"

After blindly continuing on for another half hours or so, Link finally saw a dim light up ahead. He was overjoyed! But his joy wouldn't last long as he got
closer to the light. Link no longer had any need to tap the stone floor in front of him, with the new found light ahead. When he was finally about one hundred feet
from the source of the light, he stopped and waited. In the dim light, he saw another bat flutter by overhead and out of sight. Then link saw two figures appear
from a dark cave entrance on the opposite wall. One was tall and wore a long robe with a hood over their head. The other figure looked like the monster he had
fought outside the shop in Kakariko village. The only difference was this one was carrying a long bow. Strapped to it's back was a quiver holding several arrows
in it. The taller figure was speaking too quietly for Link to hear, even when straining to listen. Just in case, though, Link readied his sword and shield and wait-
   ed in the shadows.

After several more minutes of the two figures speaking, they both disappeared back into the cavern where they had come from. Link wondered if it was safe to
proceed. Was the coast clear? Or would they be back? Link knew he would have to take a chance and move forward. So after taking a deep breath, he began to move.
He went toward the light, which turned out to be a lamp stand. Link glanced around nervously as he approached the light. He saw other dark passage ways he hadn't
seen from where he had been standing earlier. Then he saw it. A huge crack in the wall, with many smaller cracks connected to the larger one. This wall looked
different, though. The other walls were nothing more than rock walls. This wall was made up of many shiny golden bricks. It looked dazzling, aside from the many
cracks in it. He walked up to the wall and touched it, wanting to feel it with his own hands. It felt hard, and link didn't understand how there could be so many
cracks in it. Then the shaking began. Was it an earthquake? Link dropped to a knee and crouched there, clinging to his sword and shield. He didn't know what was
happening. Then, without warning, the beautiful golden wall began to collapse. Pieces of brick tumbled to the floor all around Link. He was terrified! As the shaking
continued, something large, actually humongous, appeared from behind the broken wall. Link stared up in horror at the gigantic thing. At first, he wasn't sure
what he was seeing. But as he gathered himself, he realized what it was. A giant two headed spider with human arms!
